General
Safety & Environmental Stewardship
We
are fully committed to the safety of our
employees and to the good stewardship of the
environment. Safety is the first objective
discussed in our annual performance review.
We have incorporated a culture based safety
program that begins with each and every
employee starting from the first day of
employment. We also ensure that laboratory
waste is minimized as much as possible and
that disposal follows our local, state, and
federal laws.
We
accomplish this by:
-
Providing
full safety and environmental training for new
employees
before they begin working in the
laboratory
-
Maintaining
an active steering commitee of senior
scientists to address all
safety and environmental concerns
-
Conducting
monthly safety and environment meetings for all
employees
-
Providing
monthly safety and environmental training for all
employees
-
Requiring
that all employees participate in the program
-
Documenting
our safety and environmental procedures through
written procedures such as SOPs
-
Assigning
Laboratory Stewards to monitor each
individual laboratory environment
-
Requiring
each employee to perform monthly
observations of our staff, equipment, and
procedures
Radiation
Safety
We
were originally licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulators
Commission (NRC) to test and store 14C
material. The State of Pennsylvania has
assumed that duty and regularly audits our
facility and records. Our program is effectively
monitored internally through our Radiation Safety
Officer (RSO) and Radiation Safety Commitee.
The
RSO maintains the appropriate licensing and
documentation, hosts government regulators during on-site
audits provides training for authorized
users and limited handers, receives and
ships radioactive materials and conducts
monthly laboratory surveys of laboratory
areas. The RSO also chairs our Radiation Safety
Committee which oversees and addresses
radiation safety concerns and conducts
annual compliance inspections.
